Rise of China
There was an editorial in Hindu about the huge number of gold medals in the Chinese contingent. Recently, my friends attended two conferences, in different disciplines. And they were also talking about the swarming of Zangs and Mings in these fields. And many of them had remarkable work to their credit. This is the trend there - the chinese students go abroad study in top-class universities and then they get back to their country and develop the infrastructure in their country. And China offers them very attractive packages also, so that they dont lose out personally either.

my guide is a big time fan of china. he beautifully explained why china has made remarkable progress. Well the conclusion of the discussion was that, China progressed because of communism and India's democracy is a major hindrance towards her progress. Democracy has given every tom, dick and harry a voice and this is the main problem!
@sharique : The communism examples in India are not very encouraging are they?
There are many other reasons why Chinese are doing good in acads (communism is the last reason for that!)
I'm not surprised that the Hindu wrote praising China. That newspaper is like the mouthpeice of China! (coz N Ram, the editor, is a communist!) The Hindu recently wrote an article which essentially sounded like India better give Arunachal pradesh to China!!
@Sharique: If we were in the communist China, we wouldnt have the freedom to write many of the blogs that we write! They just ban any major criticism against their govt (recent example: they ordered that google shouldn't publish any search result that is not "approved" by the govt -- so you can't get any info about, say Tianenmen square incident, in the chinese google!
They also have banned many of the websites that opposes the govt -- thanks to they having communism

I wouldn't want to live in such a country however good they are in science!! Even if india's democracy is slow and corrupt we have the freedom to say whatever we want -- we wouldn't be hanged for opposing the govt! In china you might be!!
I wonder if your guide would want to live in china! (or under some Stalin-like or Pol Pot-like communist leader!!)
Ranjith,
I am aware of the restrictions on human freedom but has the freedom done any good to India's development? I certainly agree that China has gone too far on the bans but its the development which matters at the end of the day! India is lagging behind china by a very substantial degree in many fields.
sunanda,
Its kind of confusing for me also. Is the communism or something else which is responsible for China's progress. BTW the communist states haven't done bad either. Kerala is far better than any other state in the country.
No i wouldnt say Kerala is doing far better than any state. For that matter, WB has seen 3 days strike in a span of 7 days. 14th, 21st, 22nd of this month. communism is acting more as a hindrance to development in India.
I would say that because chinese would rather do science in china than anywhere else. So science in China is progressing. I guess if most of the Indian s thought that way and the Indians living here valued ppl who think that way, then India would have progressed too.
China has been communist for a long time now, but all the development we talk of has happened in the last 20-25 years, after they started opening up for globalization (communism???)... they have the first mover advantage, over time things would get better in India as well...
as for the progress of science... i guess it is natural that something substantial should come out of china at this stage... I believe that India too wouldn't be too bad after 10-15 years if we continue to generate opportunities at this rate...
India's future is very difficult to predict. We have a democracy, which, in spite of all its faults has been there for general public.
Still literacy and healthcare are in complete dismay. People have power to vote, but they're not politically aware.
Add to that the rise of Far Right in recent past.
In spite of all these democracy is dragging on. Lets see...
