I have lost all hope now :-D

I happened to overhear a conversation in the canteen today. (Actually I overheard only the first part of the conversation. I turned towards them and actively listened to the rest of it. :-D ) Was pretty shocked, surprised and amused in turns. Ill try to sketch the picture for you here (atleast the gist)

( 3 guys, all of them btechs, maybe in 2nd/3rd year were discussing)

A: Arre yaar tu kaisi ladki se shaadi karega?

B: arre use ghar ka kaam aana chahiye, zyada ladkon ke saath na mili ho, khaana theek se banaaye.

C: Haan yaar hamaare yahan to 4th std mein hi ladkiyaan chaaye banaa leti hain. zyada se zyada ladkiyan 10th 12th tak padhti hain

B: arre 10th 12th tak padhi ho to ye sab seekhne ka time kahaan milega.

A; u know meri mausi doctor hain par sab kaam tareeke se karti hain, har cheez banaa deti hain.

B: ye sab maa baap par bhi depend karta hai na. jaisa sikhate hain wahi to hoga. maine kayi gharon mein ye bhi dekha hai k ladke badhiya khaana bana lete hain.

A; u know ladkiyon ko padhao to wo guys ka advantage cut ho jaata hai..

Believe me Im not bluffing. We were stunned. Pin drop silence in our table. This was just too good to miss :-D Im sure these creatures will also demand dowries. Wo ladkon waala advantage jo mil gaya hai unhe!! I hope that atleast by the time they graduate, they get rid of their medieval ideas.

Why did I lose hope? Well I thought today's educated men wouldnt mind dealing with a person like me. I have failed the criteria of 10th std education. I can cook sparing a few accidents (I will not starve) but not perfectly. But then I have a hope that this species is in minority. I hope to god that Im right :-D

don't worry they were northies :P
Must be from rajasthan...nothing dogmatic about rajashtan but just my general observance about them in the campus

Yup, sex-ratio decreases and chauvinism increases as you move from south to north :D

i agree :D

miss TB there is ntn wrong in what they think , each individual can have their own opinion , old fashioned or modern .... nahin kya ? for eg. sex before marriage can be termed as modern but being old fashined cud be better here.
im not supporting them but those ppl must have seen ,listened to these things while growing up.

Anon,
Don't trivialize this by terming it a mere 'old fashioned' vs 'modern' thingy.

But then, as you said, you have the right to your own opinion.

My bad. Carry on.

most of the guys, actually all of the guys, that i've been introduced to have expressed similar sentiments - albeit a slightly watered-down version!

Hey T, 90% of the telugu guys in my class accepted that the only reason they were doing a masters degree was because they could demand a higher dowry.

two girls i know of were married off as soon as they finished schooling, so that they would not have too much milna julna with guys and coz it was deemed unnecessary to educate the girls...

and there are people like our parents and friends who think otherwise..
But hopefully the balance is tipping towards our kinda thinking

everyone has right to say what they wish. some like to marry girls who can cook, not much educated etc etc, some like to marry rich men as lot of money is required to fulfill thousands of wishes ... all different views....all interesting.

@bd, sharique
ya these guys were northies :-D
but south is also not very good in this i think.
Anyway dowry is an unifying factor throughout India unfortunately. irrespective of caste, creed or religion this is the done thing.

somebody here was talking abt a tam wedding where the bride was decked in platinum jewellery from top to bottom (!! :-D ) but the MIL said that the jewellery looks like bronze so the bride's family got a new set in gold (!!!! x-( )

Ill tell u something. even the place where my parents come from, this is a common thing. m not an eligible girl there for the very same reasons :-D but then there even the boys dont study. high drop out rate. so the whole community is like this. I often say that the whole town is 50 years behind in time.

i was surprised that these guys who are studying at a premier institution blah blah continue like this. but then like sanju says education doesnt inculcate the necessary values in people. something very wrong here.

@anon
pre-marital sex and women's education are totally different issues. I hope u did recognise that when u posted that comment. one is choice-based and the other is a social evil.

as to education, surely u must have heard that educating a man helps only him but educating a woman helps the whole family.
there is this very practical aspect. suppose the hubby dies or deserts the lady, if she has even a basic degree she can find employment, help herself and not depend on anybody. avoids exploitation too. but then these things have been said over and over again everywhere else.

@~
I know I can fulfil my thousands of wishes without marrying a rich man. that post was written in a jest and i hope u saw that too :-) Was just saying that its the easier route. I think I should occasionally pat myself on the back for taking the harder route. :-D
like u said all different views , all interesting :) some harmful, some silly :)

knowing some guys in the hostel, i'm not surprised!! what can we do?!! i'm always of the view that "education" has nothing to do with the degree you hold! those guys might earn a higher degree from a prestegious insti but will remain more or less uneducated!

and wish you better luck next time in the canteen ;-)

"B: ye sab maa baap par bhi depend karta hai na. jaisa sikhate hain wahi to hoga. maine kayi gharon mein ye bhi dekha hai k ladke badhiya khaana bana lete hain." .... I liked this one.....

though i didnt learn cooking @ home, but i cook delicious food..... and not that "i will not starve" kind of food, its like, "we need not go to restaurant" kind of..... but i agree, its time consuming......
Cooking great food gives a great satisfaction.... :D
